<p>Earlier this morning, on March 2nd, the New York State Office of Cannabis Management announced that they will be increasing the number of conditional adult-use retail dispensary (CAURD) licensees from 150 to 300. This decision is part of New York's ongoing efforts to expand access to legal cannabis and increase social equity in the industry.<br /><br />This is great news for those who have already applied, as they may now have a chance at getting approved for a license. The OCM has said that they have already received about 900 CAURD applications, so doubling the amount from 150 to 300 won't be enough to cover all applicants, but it's a start. They confirmed that the 150 new applicants will be selected from the already existed applicant list.</p>

<p>CAURD businesses are businesses owned by justice-involved individuals. The CAURD licensees are the first retail dispensaries to open for adult use sales in New York.&nbsp; Sales for CAURD businesses began in December of 2022, when <a title="Housing Works Cannabis Co." href="https://weedzly.com/dispensaries/housing-works-cannabis-co?fromSearch=true">Housing Works Cannabis Co.</a>, New York's first ever legal recreational dispensary opened.</p>

<p>A <strong>justice involved</strong>&nbsp;individual is someone who has been convicted of a marihuana-related offense in New York State before March 31, 2021; someone whose parent, spouse, child, legal guardian, or dependent has been convicted of a marihuana-related offense in New York State before March 31, 2021; or someone who is the dependent of someone who has been convicted of a marihuana-related offense in New York State before March 31, 2021.&nbsp;</p>
